Richardson Regional Medical Center saw a major difference in its PR efforts just six months after I came on board. I had no choice but to hit the ground running in a hospital environment, and immediately I leveraged the health care learning curve to my advantage. I added a fresh perspective to many of the hospital’s marketing and PR materials, creating new copy and emphasizing the patient’s point of view. I used my status as a new PR contact to renew media relationships, yielding a 144% increase in meaningful media placement within just six months. I also worked with the medical staff to bring to fruition its #1 initiative for the year — to be the first hospital in the Dallas region to list patient care quality data online. Not only did I deliver the project two months ahead of schedule, but rolling up my sleeves and developing the Web pages myself rather than outsourcing saved approximately $30,000.

Recruiting
A well-placed cover story in a regional health care magazine visibly raised staff morale and gave HR a powerful tool for recruiting nurses, which remain in short supply everywhere.
Physician Marketing
Since physicians are the profit center of the hospital, it has been imperative to understand their point of view. I have done so by ghost-writing three health columns for community publications.
Emergency Communications
I treat crisis planning seriously, because preparation is a key to emergency communications. Ongoing crisis training for a pandemic flu outbreak and other scenarios has refined my readiness.
Everything comes back to an understanding of the health care business structure and a track record of solid PR plan development. I feel my success at Richardson Regional has come as a result of having these two assets.
