Educating More Than
Just Students:
Allen Independent School
District
The
real education of this fast-growth suburban school district
near Dallas involved the entire community, not just
the 16,000 students in classrooms.
With taxpayers and
state legislators demanding accountability in practically
every arena, the roles of public information and
community relations were keys to success.
My contributions in these
two areas were vital.
I kept the lines of communication open, making sure
that the right information always got into the right
hands. As one might expect, public schools come
with very public concerns. I tackled complex issues
including the following:
- Hurricane
Katrina evacuees
- A $67 million
bond election
- A landmark
state Supreme Court case
-
Record-setting fundraising campaigns
- Selecting a
new superintendent
- Board of
Trustees elections
- Building new
schools (1 per year)
- Rezoning
attendance boundaries
- Student
safety concerns
- Student
performance concerns
- Financial
accountability
The district could not have
successfully managed such challenges without an informed
community.
I contributed to numerous outreach programs that helped
the district find partners during times of crisis:
- Texas
Scholars
- Budget Action
Committees
- Community
Education programs
- Board of
Trustees meetings
- District
Leadership Team
-
Communications Council
(teachers from all 18 campuses meet with the
superintendent)
Measured Results
In 2005, a
third-party community attitude survey found that
82% of Allen ISD residents were satisfied or very
satisfied with the overall quality of their public schools.
Respondents praised the district's communications efforts
and held full confidence in our district management
team, proving a high level of goodwill that has derived
from our community relations initiatives.
